There is a lot of misinformation when it comes to nutrition and diets. A fad diet is supposed and promoted to improve health, but could have the opposite results if it is nutritionally unbalanced. You need to be careful, because fad diets can be harmful to your health and to your wallet.

Fad diets may:

  • Promote quick weight loss or make unrealistic promises.
  • Suggest special products or require special dietary supplements.

Anorexia NervosaHannah Downie, 17, is seriously underweight with less than 6 stone (38 kg), but despite the severity of her condition, doctors are unable to help her because of a lack of services in Scotland.

Faced with the prospect of a daughter who refuses to eat, Barbara Downie, Hannah’s mother, was told by doctors to treat the girl at home.

“I’ve run out of hope,” the mother-of-five said yesterday. “Hannah doesn’t want to eat. She’s admitted she would happily starve herself to death. She needs proper medical help but she’s not getting it. “The NHS doesn’t have enough beds and they’re dragging their heels about getting her into a private clinic.”

More True or FalseI noticed that people found my True or False post from a few weeks ago to be useful and some of the comments even asked for a part 2 :) . So here it is Part 2, split into 2 categories.

False facts:

Diet Plan MenuThe cut down calories plan for him will be personalized for my boyfriend who needs 2700 calories (according to Nutrition Data) in order to maintain his current weight of 84 kg (185 pounds).

His diet will be based on 1200 calories menu sample but with an extra of 500 calories/day.

Day 1

Diet Plan Menu The cut down calories plan for her, meaning for me, will start with the previous mentioned order:

  1. starting weight: 66 kg (145 pounds)
  2. 145 pounds x 15 = 2175 calories
  3. 2175 calories – 1000 calories = 1175 calories , but I will not eat less then 1200 calories. The rest it will be from fitness.

1 kg (2 pounds) of body fat has around 7800 calories, so in order to have a healthy weight loss of 1-2 pound/week you should reduce you calorie intake with 3600-7800/week. If we divide this by 7 it will result 514-1114, but let’s not get dizzy with all those numbers and stick to 500-1000 calories deficit.

Fat kidA nationwide US study has revealed that the yearly number of teenagers having surgery to tackle severe obesity has strongly increased since the 1990s. A still-small but growing number of teens are undergoing obesity surgery, which reduces the size of the stomach, to treat obesity.

“The number of bariatric procedures in adolescents has increased in the time period 2000 to 2003.Even though these are a small percent of all the bariatric operations done in the U.S., the increase has been significant.”
