5lbs of Damaging Chemicals on Your Skin

Eye ShadowThese days, everybody tries to eat as healthy as possible, to eliminate the toxins from our food, from our drinks and from our bodies. Maybe you think that a natural diet will keep you safe from toxins. It’s not true.

Our skin acts like a giant tongue and absorbs the substances it get in contact with. Most of the people that follow a detox diet or are eating as healthy as possible are missing a point: the cosmetics we put on our skin every day are absorbed and the toxins get directly into our systems.

It’s more dangerous to absorb the toxins though the skin than to swallow them because the enzymes in the saliva act like a protective shield and can brake down some toxins.

A woman uses soap or shower gel, cleaner, moisturiser, make-up foundation, mascara, lipstick and perfume – to name just a few – every day.

A new research shows that a woman absorbs almost 5lb of chemicals through her skin every year. Some of the man-made compounds have been linked to cancer, while others may irritate the skin or even cause it to age prematurely.

“We really need to start questioning the products we are putting on our skin and not just assume that the chemicals in them are safe. We have no idea what these chemicals do when they are mixed together. The effect could be much greater than the sum of the individual parts.”

Of course, there are regulations which require producers to be safe and careful about the ingredients in the beauty products, but this is not enough. You should be careful too.Don’t think that you are saving some money when using a beauty product after the use-by date just because you have not finished the tube yet.

The Royal College of Optometrists warned that old lipstick or mascara could be a “hothouse” for bacteria.

Another thing that you can do is think twice before applying any make-up. Do you really think that the makeup foundation is required today? Can you skip the eyelash conditioner too?

You’ll see that you will feel much better and you will be more attractive if you look natural and don’t have a “chemical mask” on your face.

Aren’t there better (safer)products to put on our face that we can use, like Burts Bees or others like it? I see no mention of this in this post and am very curious about that.

It’s true that some products are better than other, but still, they must have some chemical ingredients. They should have at least preservatives which makes the product “safe” until use-by date.

I believe that if you really want to use only natural products, you should make them in your house with your own fresh products.

Good post – we also need to use more “green” products in our homes to clean it – the amount of toxins in those things are awful (EPA tests show indoor air is worse for you then outdoor air).

There are some good quality companies out there with more natural makeup and skin care products – just takes some looking around. I met a woman at a flea market who made her own home made products from goat’s milk – they were very nice. So homemade is also option sometimes.
