Alcohol and Health

Alcohol and Health Do you like having a glass of red wine now and then? You should know then, that such moderate consumption of alcohol actually has a positive effect on your weight.

A recent study conducted by Society of Chemical Industry on this matter showed that women who drink lightly or moderately are less prone to gaining weight and becoming obese than those who do not. It was found that red wine especially has this positive effect on our bodies.

This determined me to read some more on the effects of drinking various types of alcoholic beverages (light and moderate drinking, of course). Let’s take a look:

  • champagne: in 2009, a study showed that drinking one or two glasses of champagne per day may have positive effects on our heart and blood circulation; this effect is due to polyphenols, chemical compounds resulting from the grapes used to make this beverage;
  • wine: polyphenols are found in wine too; moreover, wine contains resveratrol, a molecule that extends our life spans and has positive effects on preventing some blinding diseases, diabetes and Alzheimer’s; nevertheless, it seems that drinking red wine is better than drinking rosy or white wine;
  • beer: although we all know that beer does not complement your belly, it does have some proven positive effects, such as helping prevent osteoporosis; its high content of antioxidants and minerals might also encourage you to drink a glass of beer every now and then;
  • brandy: this drink contains antioxidants, due to the copper used in the distilling process and to the fact that it is a grape-based beverage; it was also found that drinking brandy prevents heart disease and fights obesity.

In conclusion, it’s ok to sometimes have a glass of wine or other type of light alcohol. But please remember: the key word here is MODERATION! As with foods, where, in order not to put on extra weight, you need to watch yourself and be moderate, alcohol-drinking must also be rational and controlled.
