Alternatives to Running

Mud runsRemember I was telling you the other day how I’m experiencing boredom these days and I’m looking for new recipes and new things to do?

Luckily enough, apart from discovering new tasty dishes, I’ve also come across some new moves which should make daily workouts lots of fun:

1. Water running

I’ve always wondered what joggers do in order to keep boredom away. As a walker, I’m more protected against boredom than runners, because I can actually look at shop windows, at the buildings and at the people walking in the street and occupy my mind.

But how can you lose boredom when you’re a runner? Here’s the answer: water running!

It’s the same as land running, only you do it in the part of the pool where the water is just above your shoulders. Among its benefits is the fact that there is no pressure on the joints or muscles as there would be if running on land.

This is one of the reason for which water running can be done by people who suffered injuries and cannot run normally.
Moreover, some claim that running in the pool improves your performance at regular running, by making you faster. And if you’re pregnant, it will help you throughout this period by relieving joint pain and helping you stay fit during advanced pregnancy weeks.

2. Mud runs

If you want to make your run more interesting, this is definitely the way to do it! Mud runs are everything but boring. They take place all over the United States. If you’re at least sixteen, you can join such races.

Apart from the actual running, there are all sorts of obstacles to get past on the way, such as crawling under something or through a tunnel, going downhill on slippery slopes and, of course, crossing mud pits and moats. These will solicit all your muscle groups and definitely pass as cardio training.

Additionally, you can enter as a team, together with some of your friends or family. Thus, you improve your fitness techniques as well as your cooperation and team player skills.

I definitely want to try these. Maybe it’s better to start with water running, then get to the mud part – leave the best for last!
