What I’m going to write to you about today is something I definitely never heard about before.
I mean, I thought it possible, I just never actually read or heard about real people experiencing “supertasting”.
What is that all about?
It’s quite simple: there are certain people whose taste buds are extremely well developed. Consequently, they experience sweetness, sourness or bitterness more acutely than the rest of us.
The fact is, scientists say supertasters do not necessarily have more sensitive taste buds, but a lot more than usual – sometimes, 100 times more than normal. This results in them tasting what we can’t detect with our normal taste buds. Or, they experience tastes at a much higher level than usual.
This leads to them not enjoying certain foods. For instance, they would find tasting lemon appalling, as it would feel 100 times sourer than what I, for instance, would feel.
The cause of someone being a supertaster relies within their genetic legacy. Moreover, if you’re a woman, you’re more likely to be a supertaster.
If you feel there are only downsides about being a supertaster, don’t be so sure. Just think about the fact that most salty or sweet foods are often dangerous to our health. Consequently, supertasters are protected from their negative effects, which include cancer or other diseases.
On the other hand, they might be inclined to avoid some vegetables, which might feel bitter to them – such as olives, broccoli, or spinach. On the same note, tomatoes or berries might feel too sour.
Test your supertaste
If you’re curious about whether you are a supertaster or not, there is a simple test to find out. You just need some blue food coloring, which you put on your tongue. You then put a piece of paper on your tongue, remove it afterwards and count the taste buds (these remain pink, as opposed to the rest of the tongue, which is blue).
If you count less than 35, you are a normal taster, and if you obtain a higher number than that, you are definitely a supertaster.
There is, of course, the other side of the coin: people who can’t distinguish between tastes also exist – these are called non-tasters. According to statistics, half the population comprises of normal tasters, while the other half is evenly distributed between non-tasters and supertasters.
