Vitamins Can Shorten Your Life

| Category: Nutrition, Steaming diets | 1 Comment

VitaminsFor years, the word “antioxidant” has been synonymous with disease-fighting for most of us, but too much of the compounds just might be bad for you.

The antioxidant supplements beta carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E may increase the risk of death rather than helping health, a new review suggests. A researcher group from Denmark published in The Journal of the American Medical Association their study conclusion. They say, based on their analysis of 68 studies on more than 25,000 people, that some of the most common antioxidants increase the risk of dying. (more…)

The Abs DietWhat is it all about?

The Abs Diet is a nutritional diet created by Men’s Health Magazine editor David Zinczenko and it’s specifically aimed at reducing stomach fat in order to obtain the 6-pack abs. The program takes six weeks with the goal to reduce fat while adding muscle. For every extra 1lb (0,5 kg) of muscle you gain, your body burns an extra 50 calories a day. This means if you can build 10lb (5 kg) of muscle, your body will burn an extra 500 calories a day, enough for you to lose 1lb a week while regular eating. (more…)

Sleep Can Make You Thinner

| Category: Motivation, Nutrition, Tips, Weight loss | 4 Comments

Sleeping CatWhen your body is rested your organs will function more effectively and you will look better and appear thinner, but if you are tired, your kidneys will retain fluid and you will appear fluffy. Sugar, caffeine and refined carbohydrates give you an energy boost, so you tend to eat more and more of that which can result in an extra weight.

If you want to lose that excess weight try to get the right amount of sleep each night. The average adult needs 8 hours sleep a night. People who sleep less than that have a 45% greater risk (more…)

Diet Pitfalls

| Category: Tips, Weight loss | 1 Comment

It is a known fact that 1 in 3 Americans are trying to lose weight, but in 3 years most dieters will regain their weight and in another 5 years they will gain some extra pounds also.

According to Harvard University researchers, there are 4 common reasons why people give up their diet. I think if you know them from the beginning you will be able to overcome them and continue with your weight loss plan.

1. Too much or too fast.

“Cause number-one [for failure] is setting too unrealistic of goals, losing too much too fast,” said Barbel Knauper, an associate professor of psychology at McGill University in Montreal. Instead of trying to lose 15 pounds (7 kg) in a month (very unrealistic) most experts suggest a slow, steady loss, about one or two pounds a week. (more…)

No Need to Both Diet and Exercise to Lose Weight

| Category: Steaming diets | 0 Comments

Measuring tapeA new study aims to destroy the widely held belief that diet plus exercise is the most effective way to lose weight. Researchers report that dieting alone is just as effective as dieting plus exercise.

“For weight loss to occur, an individual needs to maintain a difference between the number of calories they consume everyday and the number of calories they burn through metabolism and physical activity,” Dr. Leanne Redman of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, explains in a press release. Go Green!

Kids PlayingGood parents know it takes more than healthy eating habits to stay off childhood obesity. In fact, a recent study reveals environmental factors like population density, a household’s proximity to grassy areas and a household’s distance to the nearest food retailer could have a substantial impact on a child’s physical health.

Children in population-dense regions who live around green parks and lawns may be less likely to be overweight, according to a study appearing in the March/April issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion. (more…)

Binge Eating, the New Psychiatric Disorder

| Category: Nutrition, Steaming diets | 4 Comments

Binge Eating DisorderUS researchers from Harvard University conducted the first national survey of eating disorders and they published the results in the journal Biological Psychiatry. The study have described binge eating disorder as a major public health burden.
Binge eating is not yet officially classified as a psychiatric disorder, but it may be more common than the two eating disorders now recognized, anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

Most people who have eating binges feel ashamed or depressed about their overeating. Eating binges can be followed by (more…)

Keep on Pedaling

| Category: Fitness, Weight loss | 0 Comments

Bike PedalI admit that I’m not a fan of the bike and I prefer sports like tae bo or rolling, but when I don’t have time for that I have to mount my bike and start pedaling. For me the inconveniences of cycling are:

  • The pain – my back hearts really quickly;
  • I get bored – it’s not fun to stare at the wall for 30 minutes;
  • I have a very busy schedule – I work 12 hours a day;
  • I always ask myself: why today? – maybe I’ll skip today and work double time tomorrow.

Avoiding injuries

Before you start cycling, you have to do 5-10 minutes of stretching and warm up. This will prevent the injuries and also reduce the DOMS effect (delayed onset muscle soreness) which is the pain or discomfort often felt 24 to 72 hours after exercising and subsides generally within 2 to 3 days.
