Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins and nutrients. Fiber has been shown to impact blood sugar levels positively, according to the National Institutes of Health. Not to mention, fiber has other benefits like promoting heart health, which is a common problem for patients with diabetes.
For those who have diabetes, the prolonged exposure to hyperglycemia can lead to issues with high cholesterol. Fiber is known to reduce cholesterol levels, which not only contributes to diabetes health, but to heart health as well.
Fresh fruits contain vitamins and minerals like vitamin C and potassium that are essential in anyone’s diet. However, since fruits raise blood glucose levels, the American Diabetes Association recommends limiting fruit to three or four servings per day.
Although whole grains are considered to be a carbohydrate, they are less processed than white bread or regular pasta. Since they are high in fiber, they are not as easily digested, so they slow the process of the glucose being released into the bloodstream.
This means that the body does not see blood sugar level spikes because of these foods. Additionally, the fiber plays a role in lowering sugar levels.
According to the National Institutes of Health, protein is an important part of a well-balanced diet for a person with diabetes. In fact, diabetes patients who limit carb intake can compensate using high-protein, low-fat and nonfat meats and meat substitutes.
Dairy products like milk and yogurt consist of calcium and vitamin D, which are not only necessary for diabetes health, but overall health. Due to the high fat content in these foods, which can be linked to high cholesterol levels, an individual with diabetes should opt for low-fat and nonfat options.
Dangers of Diabetes Medications
Drugs can be used to maintain good diabetes health, but the process of finding the correct dosage and drug combination may be a bit tedious — especially in cases where multiple drugs are needed. Not to mention, the meds that are prescribed are not always the safest option. In fact, drugs in the thiazolidinedione category are associated with harmful side effects, including long-term complications.
One of the more serious concerns with the thiazolidinedione, Actos, is its connection with congestive heart failure. Although it can manage diabetes health well, some patients who have taken the drug developed congestive heart failure, due to fluid retention.
This side effect has caused many patients to file an Actos lawsuit against the drug manufacturer for compensation. For some patients who already had a diagnosis of congestive heart failure, they may also experience worsening in their condition.
Moreover, patients who take a higher Actos dosage, or who take it for longer than a year, are more likely to develop bladder cancer.
