Benefits of Indian Cuisine

Indian foodA new restaurant opened up in town during the holidays.

The chef is Indian and obviously the entire menu is made up of Indian specialties.

I had my lunch there today and I must say that what I really love about Indian food is that I never feel completely full and stuffed after having my meal.

Apart from that, it seems that Indian food is quite healthy, due to several facts:

The spices

All the spices used to give Indian food that wonderful aroma have proven positive effects on our health:

1. Turmeric and its main component, curcumin, has anti-inflammatory properties. Moreover, scientists have discovered that it inhibits the growth of certain types of cancer, such as head and neck cancers. Curcumin is also used for treating colon, breast and pancreatic cancer, as well as Alzheimer’s and arthritis.

2. Cardamom is also widely used in Indian cuisine. It’s good for treating digestive issues and certain problems brought about by colds (pharyngitis, sore throat). At the same time, adding this spice to food prevents you from having bad breath.

3. Anti-cancer effects have been attributed to cumin, too. It has a powerful effect on the metabolism by increasing calorie burning. A nice cup of cumin tea relieves you from flu or colds.

4. If you have a tooth ache, you should know that another spice used by Indians in their food can relieve your pain – cloves. These also have antibacterial properties, as well as being antifungal and antiseptic.

Whole-grains

Indian cuisine is rich in whole-grains, such as lentils, beans and chickpeas; these ensure all the fiber you need so that your digestive system stays healthy. Moreover, Indians use whole wheat bread, and that is definitely healthier than white flour bread. At the same time, Indian food contains well-balanced ingredients, including vegetables, fruit, fish and lean meat.

Light deserts

Desserts are not heavy, complicated courses, nor do they contain a lot of sugars. They are usually made of fresh fruit, whole grains and milk, so they are as healthy as any other food.

Healthy cooking

Lastly, Indian foods are either boiled, steamed, or roasted. They are not fried in unhealthy oils, as it often happens with Western foods.

I will be definitely getting back to that restaurant. I already have my eye on several courses I want to try!
