Capoeira, The Brazilian Workout

CapoeiraI remember back in Portugal 2 years ago, I heard this hypnotizing Afro music and a small crowd clapping and singing. Then I saw two guys flying through the air and landing with such an ease, into a circle. They displayed a scene of kicks and flips with precise movements executed in very close proximity. Yet, they never touched each other with a finger.

This was my first Capoeira lesson.

What is Capoeira?

It is an Afro-Brazilian Martian art, which combines music, dance, acrobatics, and street one-on-one combat. It became so popular that it turned into an amazing form of exercise. Most of the people love watching Capoeira, because it fills you up with energy and good vibes. However, they feel intimidated to try some Capoeira classes, mostly because of the complex dynamics of this dance.

How Capoeira can help you lose weight?

This workout is a true calorie scorcher. In fact, it will not only make you sweat, but it will also help you become more flexible, more determined, more agile, but it will also make you look really sexy and exotic for the others in your group. I do not know about you, but for me, being watched and cheered at when working out is the best motivator!

Why you will fall in love with Capoeira?

This energetic dance style of Martian arts allows you to express your imagination. Some say this dance is ‘a conversation in movement’. It has a variety of forms, where the partners plays, or fight with each other, inside a circle formed by friends or spectators, while they play cool wooden instruments like berimbau and sing.

What I found unbelievable surreal about it is that the music of the others dictates the tempo and the speed of your movements, just like with the African incantations.

You will be surprised to find out some interesting benefits:

  • It balances the body and the mind;
  • It makes you vibe the Brazilian culture through moves and singing;
  • It builds confidence;
  • It’s an efficient cardio work-out;
  • It improves circulation;
  • It sharpens your agility;
  • It makes you use groups of muscles you perhaps never used befire;
  • It takes away the stress;
  • It boosts you up with energy;
  • It connects you to a friendly and culturally diverse community.

What was my greatest achievement after practicing Capoeira for few months? It taught me discipline and made me stronger in my decisions. It made me enjoy life more and share this joy with you!

    Hey, great idea – and lots of fun, too!
    I guess i’m also maintaining my weight by dancing in clubs.
    The problem is, I also have to put up with the smoke there…
