In a previous article we’ve mentioned the possible side effects of both prescription diet pills and over the counter pills.
Most herbal weight loss supplements producers claim that their products are completely safe simply because they are entirely natural.
Unfortunately, not all herbals are safe for our health as there are many plants that if consumed even in the smallest quantities can cause serious health problems and even poisoning.
This doesn’t mean that all herbal weight loss supplements are poisonous but some of them can cause allergies and can interact with other types (more…)

Each January I think of the year that passed, what I did good, what I did wrong, and how can I make it better this year.
Losing weight is on my “things to improve” list in the last years.
I’m doing good most of the year, but when winter comes, the pounds start to add up, so losing weight is one of my new year’s resolutions (again). Maybe it’s on your list too and you still don’t know how to do it and from where to start losing weight.
U.S. News looks each year through scientific journals, reports, asks experts in food science and nutrition to make the best diets of the year rankings. The experts consider a top diet if it’s relatively easy to follow, nutritious (more…)

Happiness is a blissful state which we experience from time to time and which we constantly search.
Most people try to be happy by performing various activities that they find pleasant and self-fulfilling.
But have you ever thought that the pursuit of happiness can be associated with your diet as well?
Recent research from the fields of neuroscience and nutrition point out that the foods we eat have the power to influence our mood, improve our concentration and maintain our brain health. The same studies (more…)

We know that fad diets are the least healthy choices when it comes to weight loss.
Unfortunately people still choose them and risk serious health problems.
One of the major disadvantages of these diets is the yo-yo effect which makes people gain much more weight than they manage to lose.
In some cases people suffer from sever deficiencies and anemia which leads to failures of the organs in the worst scenarios.
However, the creators of the fad diets attract adepts through some unrealistic promises that desperate people actually believe to be true. Here are just some examples:
1. Lose up to 20 pounds in just one week. This cannot possibly be true. The explanation is actually very simple. Think about how much time you (more…)

How would you feel if I told you there could be a drug to help you loose 11% of your body fat in the first month?
I would feel interested to hear more, but I would have doubts.
This drug is not yet available, but researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston recently got to an important milestone for the drug they were testing since 2004.
They gave monkeys a drug, called adipotide, that targets the blood supply to fat cells and kills them.
After only 28 daily injections of the drug the monkeys lost an (more…)

When I fist heard about the Drinking Man’s Diet I thought it was a joke.
How could someone promote drinking alcohol on a daily basis after and during each meal?
I said to myself that this is insane and that no one could even consider such a life style.
Well, apparently I was wrong. The Drinking Man’s Diet was sold in millions of copies. It is true that it was first published in 1964, but so many copies sold sounds surreal.
Nutritionists say that this is the first low carbohydrates diet and set the bases for future diets of this type like the Atkins. This is obviously a fad diet but some of the principles do make sense. A diet that promotes low carbs (more…)

As I’ve explained in my previous article, when talking about teenagers and diets, an unbalanced way of eating can have serious health consequences.
Getting all of the essential nutrients is crucial during their growing period.
It’s also the most indicated time for them to learn how to eat healthy.
Unfortunately, we can’t ignore the fact that nowadays, most teenagers are overweight. They are also most likely to develop eating disorders during this period.
The temptation of eating fast foods or sweets and pastries is big (more…)

I remember I used to be a chubby girl when I was a teenager, the chubbiest in my group of friends, which was really frustrating for me: having to put up with the mean jokes, never wearing the same clothes as my friends did and so on.
This is why I decided to start a diet.
Trying a healthy approach to weight loss seemed like too much effort and too much time when my biggest dream was to look good in a mini skirt or a tight t-shirt.
So my first thought was to find a short and effective diet. We all know how easy it is to find fad diets on the internet, but little did I know back (more…)

The Paleo Diet is supposed to be the diet that resembles the way our ancestors used to eat.
It is based on eating mostly lean meats, seafood, vegetables, fruits and nuts, most of them in their natural state.
Nevertheless, this diet is the most controversial one: it has been ranked as one of the worst diets by a 2011 survey of experts, by US News and World Report and has also received a lot of criticism.
Nutritionists and doctors argue that the modern Paleo diet might pose health risks and does not accurately reflect the ancient Paleolithic diets. That (more…)

‘Eat right for your type‘ is the motto of this diet, created by Dr. Peter D’Adamo.
I must say I’ve always been quite skeptical about this diet but after doing a little bit of research I changed my mind at least partially.
Although he was criticized by many doctors and nutritionists because he doesn’t have enough scientific support to prove his theory, I must say that I have been quite intrigued by it and, like many others, I believe that his arguments might be partially realistic.
The key of this diet is the genetic heritage, which is known to influence our overall health, especially the illnesses we might suffer from. Since we (more…)
