Even though it is commonly known that frying can increase the risk of cancer, it was only recently that scientists concluded the damaging effects of fried foods on our health.
According to the results of the latest study conducted in Seattle, at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, men who consume fried foods on a regular basis are more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than men who have a healthy diet.
Why frying is unhealthy and even life-threatening
Preparing foods at high temperatures leads to a series of chemical reactions that allow compounds to disintegrate, exerting a negative influence (more…)

Great supermarket chains throughout Europe as well as small grocery shops have to adopt the new “traffic-light” labelling for nutrition, according to new governmental regulations.
The law was implemented in a bid to help end the confusion of consumers about the healthiest and unhealthiest foods.
Ministers and industry officials have agreed that from the middle of next year food producers and retails will use this labelling system consistently.
What is the “traffic-light” labelling system?
The “traffic-light” labelling system is also known as the “hybrid system”. Basically, it will combine colour coding in association with the (more…)

We all know how tasty and healthy apple is, but what do we know about its’ peel?
Personally I prefer my Golden Delicious with the crispy peel on, but many choose to peel it.
According to a study published in June 20 2012 in the journal PLoS ONE, led by Christopher Adams, M.D., Ph.D., University of Iowa associate professor of internal medicine and a Faculty Scholar at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the UI, ursolic acid, the compound found in apple peel boosts the brown fat and reduces obesity in mice.
What is ursolic acid?
Ursolic acid is a pentacyclic triterpenoid compound exclusively used as emulsifying agent in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food preparation. Although considered pharmacological inactive, closer examination revealed (more…)

Unhealthy lifestyle and poor nutrition has a direct and well-known health consequence: diabetes.
And probably, many of us are familiar with this condition.
We might know that besides its medical treatment, people who suffer from diabetes have to undertake specific diets.
One of its requirements is not frying your food, but instead you have to bake, boil, or grill your food. But this task may prove difficult, as most food is more tasty if fried and crusty. Well, we might reconsider this, as a new study shows.
What is the relationship between diabetes, crusty food and cardiovascular complications?
A study conducted by the University of Illinois has demonstrated that people with diabetes have a high risk for cardiovascular disease and (more…)

A study conducted in Belgium has clearly answered this question: yes, exercising before the most consistent meal of the day has a weight loss effect.
All you need to do is shake out the sleep and have a medium or intense workout for an hour or so, followed by a breakfast containing carbs.
According to the same study, it appears that the weight loss takes place only if the exercises are done before breakfast and that doing them before lunch or dinner does not have the same intense results.
The explanation lies in the fact that in the morning, before having breakfast, the body burns the stored fat and doesn’t rely on the fat (more…)

Good news for people who like beer!
I know that wine is first on the list when it comes to health benefits, but surprisingly new studies show that the moderate consumption of beer (one to two glasses) has its own health gains, such as decreased risk of heart disease and kidney problems, or increased bone strength.
Why is beer good for you?
Beer is virtually fat free, and contains more protein than wine. Beer provides carbohydrate, potassium, magnesium and B vitamins, including folic acid which can lower homocysteine in the blood (high homocysteine levels are (more…)

A lot of people believe that coffee is the culprit for health, but recent researches actually show otherwise.
If you are holding yourself from enjoying your morning brew, now there’s a reason not to.
Many studies now show that coffee may actually be good for health.
Researchers don’t ask people to drink or skip coffee for the sake of science.
Instead, they ask them about their coffee habits. The average American drank about 416 8-ounce cups of coffee in 2009 (World Resources Institute), and you are a regular coffee drinker, you might want to know what are its perks.
Let’s have a look, condition-by-condition look at the research.
One or three cups of coffee per day may counter risk factors of stroke and heart attack
A study reveals that the risk of being hospitalized for heart problems (more…)

I’ve heard many of my friends saying that exercising vigorously makes them hungry.
However, this theory has been recently deemed as not entirely true.
In a recent research conducted at the Brigham Youth University by a series of world-class researchers, it has been shown that an exerciser’s motivation for food is actually decreased after a 45 minute moderate-to-vigorous workout. How is this possible? Here’s how.
The research was conducted on thirty five women who were shown a series of food pictures, both after a morning (more…)

When you decide to lose weight, one first step is to clean your kitchen of all the junk food and go shopping for healthy diet food. Right?
But do you know what “healthy” food means?
We tried in the last few years to teach you how to read the labels and how to choose the write food for you, but I know it’s not always easy.
Have you ever found yourself in the supermarket staring at a shelf full of different cereal boxes, wishing someone could just point out the one with the best price, lowest sugar content, and the best reviews?
IBM thought of that and found a new solutions for smarter retail: your personal shopping assistance.
The new smartphone app developed by researcher scientists at IBM (more…)

It is not healthy to eat too much.
Doctors say it, nutritionists agree…so, following the logic, it should be a proven fact.
Weight problems lead to a long series of health problems.
For this reason, everybody recommends us not only to eat correctly but also to keep a balance in our daily menu of quantities and ingredients.
A group of researchers from the Institute of Health Ageing, University College London is conducting a study that aims to prove how eating less that we do now will make us live more. Apparently, the conclusion is rather simple (more…)
