All my life I’ve been told that sitting up straight should be the only position to sit in, because it helps prevent back pain, spinal stenosis, lumbar pain, herniated discs and of course improves our posture.
However according to a research led by Scottish and Canadian scientists and presented at the annual meeting of Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), show that the best position to relieve the spinal strain is leaning back at about 135 degrees.
The researchers used a new form of MRI, to determine which are the best, and which are the worst positions for our spine. Twenty two volunteer (more…)

The risk of early death is raised for the people who consume a red meat moderately, a recent study points out.
The study was conducted on more than 120,000 American men and women and the findings have astonished researchers.
Apparently, the daily consumption of unprocessed red meat increases mortality risk with 13 percent. When it comes to processed meat, the death risk is even greater.
People who consume a hot dog or two strips of bacon every day face a 20 percent risk of death. According to Dr. Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, the study’s results (more…)

In the fight with weight loss some people do their best to drop the number of pounds and shape their body the way they dream.
They follow their diet plan strictly, count calories and work out.
And yet, they are not dropping pounds.
If you have been through such an experience, then you are probably eager to understand what happens. In most cases, weight loss is hampered by a series of little habits which seem harmless at first. These habits are those that might sabotage your efforts to get a toned, fit body.
Do you „overthink” your healthy meals?
A recent report released by Yale University shows that a strange thing happens when people focus too much on making diet decisions. If you (more…)

We usually know that regular alcohol consumption elevates the risk of breat cancer but recent studies point out that red wine is an exception to this rule.
According to a research conducted by the specialists from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and published in the Journal of Women’s Health, red wine reduces breast cancer risk.
This thing is possible because of the chemicals contained in the seeds and skins of red grapes. These chemicals contribute to the diminution of estrogen levels. Also, they have the role to raise testosterone among (more…)

I was aware that a diet rich in fibres is essential for the regulation of bowel function, but, according to a new study, fibres are the most effective method to combat bowel cancer.
Published by the British Medical Journal, the study, whose main aim was to investigate the association between intake of dietary fibre and whole grains and risk of colorectal cancer, points out that for every 10 gram increase in total dietary fibre, the risk of bowel cancer lowers by 10 per cent.
The discovery does not come as a surprise for members of the medical world since, for many years, nutritionists claimed that a high intake (more…)

In my recent search for news about nutrition I came about a very interesting title that attracted my attention – „why cooking counts”.
I started immediately to read the whole article, which is in fact the summary of a study conducted by the Harvard research institute.
The research shows that cooked meat makes us more energetic than raw meat.
Through such a discovery, the study questions the validity of the current food labeling system and suggests that humans are adapted to make cooking beneficial for them.
Further on, the study has also compared the energetic effects of (more…)

Starting a new diet or trying to lose weight should always be done under medical supervision.
We are all aware of that.
But when do you know if you need to lose weight?
Until now we used to find out this by calculating our body mass index (BMI).
Even the nutritionists used this index to establish whether a person has the right body weight.
Well, it seems now that the BMI is no longer that safe. Why?
- Not all the people have the same medical background. There are (more…)

I’ll start today’s post by asking you a question: if you have a supermarket just five minutes away from where you live, and a regular market at half an hour, where do you usually shop?
Don’t lie! It’s understandable if you say you would probably go to the supermarket.
This is the world we live in – we don’t usually have the time to do what we like, so we sometimes settle for what is easier to do. On the other hand, many of you might answer that they do go to the market situated further away.
For some time, state authorities have believed that the answer is the (more…)

There are many religions which favor and encourage fasting.
Some forbid only eating meat over certain periods of time, others urge you to give up any animal product, including eggs and dairy altogether.
I personally know people that claim fasting does them good, but I can’t help wondering whether the lack of nutrients isn’t too harmful.
Fasting is not always linked to religious beliefs. In fact, this word is often used in order to describe an action of depriving oneself from certain foods (more…)

I was doing a bit of shopping yesterday at the local supermarket, and I came across a bag of chips which was labeled as “diet snack” and allegedly contained “0 fat”.
I immediately got suspicious and, when I got home, I did some research on this matter.
It appears that these snacks contain a fat substitute called olestra.
It is supposed to make food taste as savory as the “bad” chips or other snacks, but without loading you with calories which might add to your (more…)
