Genes’ Influence On Your Diet
As if it wasn’t difficult enough to lose a few pounds, I’ve recently found out that weight loss and dieting are closely linked to our genes.
Yes, my dears, the reason why a diet works or not for each of us may depend greatly on our genetic structure.
Moreover, genetics may offer answers as to why, for instance, some people suffer more from negative effects of a diet rich in fats, while other seem that they can eat anything and still remain slender. It’s all in our DNAs!
Soon, our diets prescribed to us by nutritionists will be entirely based on genetic factors. In other words, each of us will have his own personal and unique diet.
This is the idea behind The Gene Smart Diet, by Floyd Chilton, PhD. He says that understanding and controlling the way our genes work should keep us away from extra pounds, as well as from several diseases.
Consequently, what he recommends is:
- make sure your intake of polyphenols is appropriate; these are substances I’ve mentioned before as being quite important for our health;
- eat foods containing omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, or take relevant supplements;
- more dietary fibers – this will help you lose weight;
- for the same purpose and for maintaining your weight, decrease the number of calories you eat by 20 to 30%;
- exercise, of course; half an hour a day of workout will definitely help both you and your genes.
However, at this point, this whole “nutritional genetics” is still work in progress. This is a field where variables are numerous and the slightest mistake could dramatically change the results.
So, specialists urge you to be careful when engaging in diets based on genetics. Nevertheless, the weight loss program promoted by Dr Chilton seems appropriate and should benefit your body. Even if it may be proven that it has nothing to do with genes, this diet is based on five principles that can never fail.
