Jumping Rope

Jump RopeI told you yesterday about my favorite diet, the Mediterranean one. I was thinking I should go on the same note – meaning, share with you what I prefer in terms of food, diet and fitness. So, I’ll tell you about my no. 1 exercise: jumping rope!

Why do I love this type of workout? I’ll give some of my own reasons and a few extra ones, in case you were thinking about trying it:

  1. It’s easy and at ease! Can you think of an easier and more effortless way to work your body? And, more than that, you can practice it virtually everywhere. You don’t have to go to a fancy gym, you don’t need to get into a special outfit, you just need your rope and a bit of space.
  2. It’s cheap – you have to just own a jump rope, which you can get from any store selling sportswear or fitness stuff; no special devices, outfits or other items are required in order to enjoy this simple exercise.
  3. It can be performed by your entire family: you can either use the same rope as your brother or other family you have living with you. Or, if you have kids, this is a great way to spend time with them, keep them active and stay fit yourself.
  4. It’s great for your health. Jumping rope is an excellent cardiovascular exercise. Also, it strengthens your arms and shoulders. It is also recommended for improving your coordination between your eyes and your limbs. On a side note, you should know that rope jumping is less stressful on your knees than running, as the shock of each jump or step is absorbed by both legs.
  5. It burns calories. Jumping rope for one minute burns on average 11 calories per minute. However, if you really speed up your jumps, you can burn 20 calories per minute. According to the National Institute of Health, you could burn 750 calories per hour by jumping rope. You can alternate rope jumping with jogging or other exercise, or you can even try running while jumping.
  6. It’s portable. As I mentioned above, jumping rope is easy and it’s cheap because you only need a rope to do it. So, for the same reason, you can take this fitness wonder anywhere with you – during your holidays or even on business trips.

Did I convince you to fit rope jumping in your exercise routine? Me, I’m going right now to have a jumping session. There’s no fuss, I can jump for as long as I want just outside my house, on the lawn.
