You know those moments, when you just get home, you’re tired and hungry and the best option seems to be throwing something in the microwave oven and have it ready in 5 minutes.
Well, we all sense that this might not be the healthiest choice, but we prefer not to think about it.
But what is the truth?
The first thing you need to consider is that the ready-made meals which come in packages and take just a few minutes for baking are generally not healthy. If you just have a quick look at the label you will be convinced, without further proof.
The problem with most of such meals is that sodium amounts in them hit the roof. More than that, they also reach the outer limit of carbohydrates. If you add to all of these the fact that they may also be full of saturated fats and preservatives, then the picture is complete. I believe you’ll think twice before eating out of the box.
However, you can eat healthy out of the microwave oven, you’ll just have to mix the ingredients yourself. Here is my favorite recipe:
- in a bowl, combine a few chunks of chicken with chopped chili peppers, cheese, onions and one cup of water; you may also add some mushroom soup; bake in the microwave oven for 15 minutes.
Of course, a baked potato is always a choice. Anyway, researchers are not yet sure whether microwave cooking has worse results on nutrients than regular cooking. Just don’t exaggerate with the microwave and use it only when you really are in a hurry.
