How calories work?
I have briefly talked about how calories work and what’s the chemistry behind losing weight, but some of you asked me to try to explain it in another way.
This is simply mathematics. One kilogram (2 pounds) of fat is 7000 calories and according to the First Law of Thermodynamics, energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only converted from one form to another. This means that you have to find a way to transform the 7000 calories (more…)

Walking, as any other exercise, is good for your heart, improving cardiovascular fitness and is good for your mind giving you a “happy” feeling.
I need to go to a gym for a proper workout
Be honest with yourself and answer to this question: how often do you actually go to a gym? Walking is free, can save gas and money, it’s better for the planet and can make you fit. Sure, at a gym you can get valuable information from an instructor, you can grow more muscles, but if you want to lose weight, than this is a very good start. (more…)

Ontario residents with questions about healthy eating and nutrition can now seek out free answers online or by telephone.
Health Promotion Minister Jim Watson has launched the free EatRight Ontario telephone service to provide what he calls “credible information”.
Watson says the service will connect people directly with registered dieticians to discuss healthy food choices and explain diet-related health risk factors. (more…)

A typical daily food plan tells you how much of each food you can eat. Many people, however, are not very clear on portion sizes. That’s why you may have to measure and weigh your foods until you can recognize a typical portion by sight.
For a couple of weeks, use measuring cups and a food scale to measure all the food you eat. In time, you’ll recognize what a half-cup of rice or 3 ounces of meat looks like and you can stop measuring.
Where and how you eat
If you eat while watching TV or talking on the phone, (more…)

Many though of using the energy produced in fitness centers, but a few have done it. California Fitness Gym from Hong Kong is the first gym that actually stores and uses the energy.
The California Fitness Gym is more efficient and it is reducing the impact on the environment by using the energy created during the exercises into light and heat.
The consoles of the exercise machines themselves were already powered by human energy. But about 90 percent of the energy produced during workouts was dissipated as heat. (more…)

As a member of some weight loss online communities I read all the time people forcing themselfs to drink a lot of water. They say that a weight loss program without at least 2-3 liters (8-10 glasses) of water a day will have no effect. It couldn’t be more wrong!
Water helps you feel full if you are on a diet and you will no longer feel the need to eat that much, but a part of that, the excess water will do you no good.
The importance of water for your body
Water is your body’s principal chemical component, with 60 % of your weight. A proper level of body hydration is essential because water:

These days, everybody tries to eat as healthy as possible, to eliminate the toxins from our food, from our drinks and from our bodies. Maybe you think that a natural diet will keep you safe from toxins. It’s not true.
Our skin acts like a giant tongue and absorbs the substances it get in contact with. Most of the people that follow a detox diet or are eating as healthy as possible are missing a point: the cosmetics we put on our skin every day are absorbed and the toxins get directly into our systems. (more…)

Usually people don’t just wake up and say “Starting with today I’m going to eat healthier and I’m going to exercise more”. No! This is happening most of the time without even realizing it.
You just feel better eating a grilled chicken breast than a portion of French fries and then you feel like taking a walk to the grocery store or like getting down from the bus 2 stations earlier and walk home.
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services has a list with the small steps you can do to lose weight. I haven’t realized how many things I am already doing without any effort.
I wrote in bold the steps I took until now and I’m a little bit over 50 % with 61.
This is good, I would say, taking into consideration that I live in an apartment and I don’t have kids (to play with) or a dog (to walk).
So what’s your “score” on the small steps to lose weight list?
- Walk to work.
- Use fat free milk over whole milk. (more…)

This is the time that everybody expected for the entire year. Take a few days off, forget about work, about the city and problems and just go and relax in a heavenly location.
You should be careful though and avoid all inclusive holidays if you don’t want to gain back in just 1 week every pound you worked at the gym to get it off.
It’s impossible to stay away of the delicious dishes and services the hotels lure you with:
- unlimited meals and snacks including breakfast, lunch and dinner
- unlimited beverages including premium alcohol, juices and soft drinks (more…)

It’s a fact that cows don’t produce vanilla milk, or strawberries milk, even though every groceries store has them on the shelf. But how about naturally skimmed milk?
A group of researchers from New Zealand are already on the way to make cows produce naturally skimmed milk with the new discovered genes that enable cows to do that.
“The New Zealand approach could be used to breed cows that still produce full-fat milk but with only the good fats, which could swing things back in favor of full-fat milk. (more…)
