Red Wine Fights Breast Cancer
We usually know that regular alcohol consumption elevates the risk of breat cancer but recent studies point out that red wine is an exception to this rule.
According to a research conducted by the specialists from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and published in the Journal of Women’s Health, red wine reduces breast cancer risk.
This thing is possible because of the chemicals contained in the seeds and skins of red grapes. These chemicals contribute to the diminution of estrogen levels. Also, they have the role to raise testosterone among premenopausal females and this is what contributes significantly to the reduction of breast cancer risk.
The researchers made it clear that it was the red grape, as a fruit, that contains the key compounds to combat this type of cancer and not just the red wine. The study was conducted on 36 premenopausal women who were divided randomly into two groups:
- the red wine group (Cabernet Sauvignon)
- the white wine group (Chardonnay)
Their study points out that the estrogen levels of the premenopausal women who drank eight ounces of red wine every evening for a month were actually lower. Conversely, when blood tests were run on the group of women who consumed white wine, specialists observed that the effects were not the same.
The purpose of the study was to find out whether the ingredients of red wine can imitate the effect of aromatase inhibitors. Apparently, the aromatase inhibitors are drugs that hinder the development of aromatase, an enzyme which is involved in estrogen levels. The aromatase inhibitors are used to combat breast cancer in breast cancer therapy.
The discovery casts a doubt over the common belief that the consumption of all types of alcoholic drinks raises a woman’s chances of developing breast cancer. Alcohol is seen as a danger for one’s health because it boosts the estrogen levels and this leads to the growth of cancer cells.
Researchers concluded that a larger study is required in order to determine how safe and effective red wine might be in reducing breast cancer risk.
