The Abs Diet

The Abs DietWhat is it all about?

The Abs Diet is a nutritional diet created by Men’s Health Magazine editor David Zinczenko and it’s specifically aimed at reducing stomach fat in order to obtain the 6-pack abs. The program takes six weeks with the goal to reduce fat while adding muscle. For every extra 1lb (0,5 kg) of muscle you gain, your body burns an extra 50 calories a day. This means if you can build 10lb (5 kg) of muscle, your body will burn an extra 500 calories a day, enough for you to lose 1lb a week while regular eating.

How it works

For six weeks you’ll have six meals a day: 3 main meals and 2 snacks. You will include 2-3 of the 12 power foods at each of the three main meals and 1-2 power foods as part of each of three smaller snacks.

The 12 power foods:

  1. Almonds and Other Nuts eaten with skins intact
  2. Beans and Other Legumes
  3. Spinach and Other Green Vegetables
  4. Dairy: Fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese
  5. Instant Oatmeal: Unsweetened, unflavored
  6. Eggs
  7. Turkey and other lean meats. Lean steak, chicken, fish
  8. Peanut Butter – All-natural, sugar-free
  9. Olive Oil
  10. Whole-Grain Breads and Cereals
  11. Extra-Protein (Whey) Powder
  12. Raspberries and Other Berries.

Looking at those 12 power foods, how the diet calls them, “Turkey and other lean meats” and “Raspberries and Other Berries” caught my eye. Why not just “lean meats” or “any berries”? Well…the reason is not a scientific one, it just helps to make a catchy acronym – absdietpower :) .

The meal plan is not all! You’ll have to do a 30-minute workout 3 times a week with a rigorous schedule:

  • Strength training: Three times a week.
  • Additional cardiovascular exercise: Optional, on non-strength-training days.
  • Abs exercises: Twice a week.

My opinion

The author of the book says that the abs diet will help you discover how to:

  • nourish your body and mind,
  • wipe out carvings,
  • create and maintain an incredible physique,
  • have all-day energy,
  • enjoy great sex-life,
  • beat stress instantly,
  • stay young (almost) forever.

I say that this is just another diet with strength training, good nutrition and exercise. Nothing new, nothing spectacular. You just have to work your body to the gym and have some extra cash for the proteins and supplements recommended in the book.
