Working Out During Summer Days
As I’ve told you before, I love working out outdoors.
So, as you would expect, summer provides me with a great setting for exercising.
However, not everything is so wonderful.
There are days – especially during July and August – when it’s simply too much to do it: too much sun, too many ultraviolet rays.
So what is there to do? Give up exercising? I think not!
Here are some tricks I use in order to overcome hot summer days:
- We all know that sun block should be worn during summer days, even when it’s cloudy and even early in the morning (and even in winter). Nevertheless, when working out, several other conditions must be met: the sunscreen should be waterproof or, better yet, sweat resistant and make sure you re-apply it frequently enough so its effects don’t wear off.
- Contrary to what you might be thinking, it’s better to wear exercising gear in darker colors. That’s because darker colors also block UV rays. If you fear that heat will affect you because of the color, choose synthetic moisture-resistant fabrics, which will keep sweat off your body.
- Always wear a hat of some sort and remember that the tips of your ears might remain exposed, so apply some sunscreen.
- Stop if you feel dizzy or nauseated – these may point out towards heat stroke; make sure you carry with you always a bottle of water in order to prevent dehydration; it does you good to splash your face with water when feeling exhausted during your workout, but the best thing is to ingest fluids.
- If you can, schedule your workout early in the morning, before 10 a.m., or later in the evening, after 4 p.m. The UV rays are less powerful at this time, although, as said above, you should still wear sunscreen.
- Also, if the area where you live permits it, choose a workout surface that doesn’t reflect sun rays. Avoid sandy surfaces, water out in the open and tennis courts.
This should be enough for ensuring your wellbeing when working out outdoors during summer. Of course, sunglasses are recommended, so choose wisely the perfect pair.
